WaterSmart Crystals should be applied uniformly to the soil surface using a conventional seed spreader and then tilled to a depth in which the particular plant’s roots grow. A covering layer of untreated surface soil(½-1 inch) should follow.
Following planting, we advise heavy watering or irrigation to fully hydrate the crystals.

Rate of Application:
Application rate is 2-5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft per inch of soil depth. Never use more than 5 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft of 1 inch till, as prolonged sponginess may occur. After your first rain, a small amount of expanded polymer may appear, however, the exposed polymer will soon dissolve and after the roots grow, any soil looseness will quickly dissipate.

Some factors which influence a soils application rate are:

Soil characteristics: higher rate on light/sandy soils; lower rate on heavy/dense soils.

Climate conditions: use a higher rate if area suffers from low natural water sources and/or high evaporative losses. Use a lower rate if water table is high or rainfall is normally heavy and soil drains poorly. The amount of sun vs shade of the particular area can also be considered.

Type of sod/grass : This is a major factor to be considered. Use a higher rate if the particular grass strain requires frequent watering; use a lower rate if the grass is drought-resistant or susceptible to water-induced infections.

Sodding:
Well before placing sod, first treat the soil with WaterSmart Crystals by blending the polymer crystals into the soil at a depth of 2-4 inches. Blending can be performed either by hand, a spade, or mechanically with power tiller. After blending, the soil should be leveled evenly. This should be following by thorough watering, preferable over a 24 hour period. Next, sod should be placed and watered as normal until well rooted.

Seeding:
If seeding, treat the soil with WaterSmart Crystals by blending the polymer crystals into the soil at a depth of 2-4 inches. Blending can be performed either by hand, a spade, or mechanically with power tiller. After blending, the soil should be leveled evenly, and then top-dress with ½-1 inch of untreated soil. Sow your seed as per instructions, water the treated area liberally to allow full absorption. Your WaterSmart Crystals will start absorbing water instantly and hydrates completely in several hours.

In any application, you should follow a normal watering or irrigation program until the roots begin to grow into the treated layer of soil.

Existing Lawns:
It is difficult, but not impossible to apply the product to established turf. Core aerating the lawn and manually pouring a distributed amount of WaterSmart Crystals into each hole and top-dressing the area with untreated soil(ensure to top holes!). Their are a number of mechanical polymer injection systems on the market for commercial use. Your local rental company may carry such a unit.
